People who actually care about their Snapchat scores woke up to an unpleasant surprise this morning.

A number of Snapchat users have reported that their scores appear to have plummeted by thousands of points, and they've got no idea why.

Snapchat has never said how a user's score is determined - it appears to go up the more you use the app, but it's hard to say exactly how points are allocated.

The score is seen as a status symbol by some of the app's more devoted users, so the mysterious drops have caused outrage on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: "Why did my Snapchat score go down 11,000 points? Why did everyone's score go down? What is this Snapchat?"

Another tweeted at the multi-billion dollar company, saying: "I live for Snapchat, why has my score gone down like 10k?"

Some users said their scores had been restored after a few hours, but the problem is persisting for many.

Life is hard for millenials at the moment, so this latest scandal is hitting Snapchat users pretty hard. The Independent has contacted the company for more information.
