From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Adult website Pornhub says that it can save Vine, the video sharing company, by buying it.

The company has sent an official letter to Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Vine’s owner Twitter, offering to buy the company. In doing so it hopes to help avoid it being shut down entirely, as Twitter and Vine have announced it will do.

The company does make clear that the site would turn into a porn site. The letter sent to Mr Dorsey by Pornhub CEO Corey Price says that Vine would be restored “back to its NSFW glory”.

But the company also makes clear that it would look to save the Vines that are currently hosted on the site, as well as presumably letting people create new Vines. The former aim is unnecessary, since Vine is still letting people see old posts on their website; but the latter is for now impossible because the company has discontinued the app that was the only way of posting to the network.

The full letter says that Pornhub would look to purchase the site because of the similarities between the two. It also praises the fact that the site was able to “capture the uniqueness of humanity with Vine”.

“My company Pornhub, the leading adult entertainment site with more than 60 million daily visitors, has a lot in common with Vine,” writes Mr Price. |Now, before you start rolling your eyes, hear me out Jack.

“We’re interested in purchasing Vine from you. We figure since Twitter has dropped it and is having significant layoffs that you and your stakeholders could benefit from a cash infusion from the sale of Vine”.

That was a reference to Twitter’s gradually weakening financial results and the fact that it was forced to cut huge swathes of its staff.

The letter ends with a note that Pornhub hopes that Mr Dorsey will consider the offer and that it looks “forward to the possibility of arranging a meeting to discuss the details”.
