Your support makes all the difference.If you’ve let your Pokémon Go playing slide recently, chances are it’s because the hopes of evolving your Weepinbell didn’t look when good when you’re starting with approx. three candies.
But over the last few days, Niantic has been rolling out an update that brings the long-promised ‘buddy system’, which should help you get closer to that magic 151 number and allow you to have your life back.
Accessing it isn’t immediately obvious. Once you’ve updated the app you’ll need to hit the player icon in the bottom left of the screen, then the menu in the bottom right and then select ‘BUDDY’.
Here you can chose a Pokémon to walk with you, accruing candy for it in the process (easter egg: apparently after walking 10km with Pikachu, the loyal little guy will hop your shoulder).
Each Pokémon needs to walk a different length to yield 1 x candy and be warned, if you switch them out midway through you’ll lose those footsteps.

The full details for the latest Pokémon Go update are as follows:
- Added Pokémon GO Plus support [that’s the wristband]
- Implemented Buddy Pokémon: Trainers will now be able to choose one of their Pokémon as a buddy. The buddy Pokémon will earn a Candy after a certain distance is travelled.
- Fixed an issue where Eggs would sometimes hatch without displaying the animation
- Fixed network reliability issues
- Minor text fixes
