Mobile data traffic explosion tops mobile and wireless industry trends for 2010

Mobile data traffic is set to explode in 2010 putting strains on current 3G networks and causing network providers to reconsider pricing plans.

Juniper Research released their list of top ten trends on December 15.

The market researcher predicts that in 2010 the increased burden of data requests coming from smartphones and wireless mobile devices, could put 3G networks under so much strain that they may begin to fall. Juniper Research highlighted the sales of 33.8 million iPhones as one of the main contributing factors to the rise in mobile data.

According to Juniper Research, the second trend we may see in 2010 is the rise of greener mobiles and mobile technology as consumers and industry watchdogs place more pressure on mobile phone manufacturers to create eco-friendly devices and technology.

The cloud computing trend that has blown through the computing world will also change the mobile and wireless industry with an influx of on-demand services, applications and data stored within the cloud.

The start of a new category of "smartbooks" (also known as tablet devices) - devices that are somewhere between a smartphone and a netbook - will emerge on the markets and will find "a rich seam in 2010," says Juniper Research.

The growth of App Stores, mobile social networking, LTE networks and NFC (Near Field Communication) phones are also among Juniper Research's list of mobile and wireless trends for 2010.
