Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Meghan McCain, daughter of failed presidential candidate John McCain has apologised over a Twitter picture that saw her labelled a 'slut' on the microblogging site.
The 24-year-old columnist for the Daily Beast website threatened to quit Twitter over the response to the photo, but then posted an apology.
"I do want to apologise to anyone that was offended by my Twitpic," McCain said.
"I have clearly made a huge mistake and am sorry 2 those that are offended."
She said that she had taken the photo herself while at home and posted it on the popular social network.
But the nasty reaction from Twitter users took her by surprise, and quickly turned into a media storm.
In another tweet under her name mccainBlogette she wrote: "When I am alone in my apartment, I wear tank tops and sweatpants. I had no idea this makes me a 'slut'. I can't even tell you how hurt I am".
In her column on Daily Beast, McCain continued on the topic.
"It's not like I was caught making a sex tape. I certainly didn't pose nude for Playboy. And I hadn't even exposed a nipple.
"Could it be it's because I have breasts? Because for those of you who didn't know, I have two. They're larger than some women's and not as big as others.
"I don't usually show off my cleavage — as I did in the photos I posted — which I will admit is not the smartest thing I have ever done. But it's just not worth the drama it caused."
The offending photo has since been removed.
