The premium phone only gets a special case, not a new colour

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The red colour – which will also come to the Plus-sized version of the phone – is part of Apple's work to combat HIV and Aids. It follows a similar version of the iPhone 7, and comes almost exactly a year after that update.
The new version looks almost exactly the same, since the iPhone 8 largely resembles its predecessor. But it does have one minor but important change: the bezels around the screen, which was white on last year's model, has now been changed to black.
Apple's premium iPhone X did not get an update. That only comes in two colours, silver and black, with Apple keeping the more unusual colours for the iPhone 8.
But it did announce that it will release a red leather folio for the X, which is also part of the Product Red programme.
Together, all the new releases are part of Apple's long collaboration with that campaign, which gives funding to HIV and Aids programmes around the world. The company has made red versions of many of its products, and most of its first-party accessories.
“This special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone features a stunning red and black colour combination and also offers customers the opportunity to make an impact in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing.
“iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus improve on everything we love about iPhone, including Retina HD displays that are more beautiful than ever, the most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone with the A11 Bionic and more advanced cameras for unbelievable photos and videos. We are proud to support (RED) with this bold new iPhone and hope customers think it is as special as we do.”
The new iPhone and the new case sell for the same price as the non-red versions of the same product. That is $99 for the case, or the same in pounds, and the phone starts at $699.
