From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Fans of Nakoi Matsuda were searching for news of the Japanese footballer following his tragic death on Thursday, August 4. Outside of Japan the mysterious new Harry Potter website was also a popular term search term over the past seven days, as was the Muslim holy months of Ramadan.

"????" (Nakoi Matsuda) was the most searched for term around the world over the seven days prior to August 8, according to data from Google Insights. The Japanese footballer and former member of the national team collapsed after suffering a suspected heart attack while training for his club Matsumoto Yamaga and later died at the hospital. He was 34 years old.

Pottermore, the mysterious website related to the Harry Potter franchise was the term with the second largest increase in growth over the past seven days. The popularity of the term "pottermore" can be attributed to a competition that ran from July 31through August 6 giving a few lucky fans early access to the site before its official launch in October.

The search term with the third most significant increase in growth over the past seven days was the Muslim holy month of "Ramadan." This year's event began on August 1 and continues until August 29. The majority of searches for Ramadan originated in North Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The search terms with the most significant growth worldwide in the last seven days, as  measured by Google Insights and recorded August 8, were:

01. "????" (Nakoi Matsuda) (breakout*)
02. pottermore (+200%)
03. ramadan (+60%)
04. e okul (+50%) online administrative tool for the Turkish education system
05. anses (+40%) Argentinean social security bureau
06. bloomberg (+40%)

*Breakout defines a search term that has experienced a change in growth greater than 5,000 percent.
