Fortnite creator Epic Games has brought one of the most hotly-anticipated features to its hit game, finally allowing players to merge their accounts across consoles with one set of login credentials.

The update means players on Nintendo Switch, PS4 or Xbox One can consolidate their V-bucks and collectibles – items like skins and emotes – across platforms.

Previously, Sony prevented PS4 players from logging into their Fortnite accounts from other consoles, meaning items would be inaccessible if they logged in from a rival console.

Epic Games announced the long-awaited account merge feature on its website, explaining the steps that need to be taken in order to activate it.

Essentially, players will need to choose which account will be their primary account and link any other account to it.

Items will then be automatically be transferred from the secondary account to the primary accoung after two weeks and the secondary account will be deactivated.

Several terms and conditions need to be heeded in order for the account merging to be successful.

"One account must have played on Xbox One or Switch and the other on PS4 before September 28th 2018 to be eligible. Your account must not currently be banned or disabled," Epic Games notes.

"If you have duplicate 3rd party login like Facebook on both your Primary and Secondary account, the Secondary login will be unlinked. You can unlink it prior to merging

"Battle Royale will allow you to merge all cosmetic items. Save the World will allow you to merge Llamas, Defenders, Heroes, Schematics, Survivors, XP, Evolution and Perk Materials.

"Other Items such as Unreal Marketplace items, Creative Islands, and Save The World account level and progress will not be merged over from your secondary account."

Since launching in 2017, Fortnite has become one of the most popular video games of all time, attracting more than 200 million players. A recent in-game concert saw 10 million players witness a 10-minute set by DJ Marshmello.
