Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Royal Wedding

A cheesy tribute

With companies across this green and pleasant land desperately trying to outdo each other to make the best (worst) Royal wedding tat, pizza-delivery company, Papa John's, might have stolen the crown. It asked its "food artists" to make this charming Wills 'n' Kate pizza, complete with ham and mushroom faces.

Nature

A mine's deadly legacy

Between 1984 and 2010, the Hobet coal mine in West Virginia slowly destroyed the mountain on which it was built. The website Good used satellite imagery from Nasa to document the growth and sprawl of the mine, showing its footprint in a hellish mixture of rivers of toxic sludge and clouds of carbon dioxide.

Food

Will Noma be toppled?

Tonight sees the winners announced in the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants Awards and the foodie establishment will descent upon the Guildhall to celebrate. With Ferran Adrià's El Bulli now closed, will René Redzepi's Noma retain its No1 slot? Or will former champ Heston Blumenthal manage to cook his way back to the top? Watch live here:

Film

Carry on screaming

The second and third instalments may have been rubbished by critics, but that hasn't stopped Wes Craven filming a fourth part to the Scream series. Ghostface returns, along with a host of familiar characters and a new batch of young stars including Kristen Bell and Alison Brie.

Travel

Hand-drawn London

The Museum of London is currently hosting an exhibition of hand-drawn maps, created by different artists seeking to convey what life in the capital means to them. Condé Nast Traveller features a selection, with takes including: "Selected Loos of London" and Brixton imagined as a tree.

Music

Bon appetiser

Justin Vernon, of Bon Iver, has hinted that he is going to take a new musical direction for his as-yet-untitled second album, expected to be released in June. Despite the project being shrouded in mystery, the Kanye West collaborator has posted a video on his website featuring 50 seconds of music and a painting.

Society

The science of squirming

Why do other people's awkward moments make us squirm? Previously, little research had been conducted on "vicarious embarrassment", but a new study, highlighted by Jezebel, has found that watching other people make fools of themselves triggers the part of the brain where we process pain.
