From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The name of British supermodel "Naomi Campbell" is the most talked about topic on Twitter on the morning of August 5.

Campbell was summoned to give evidence during a war crimes tribunal on August 5. During the trial the model revealed that African dictator and former Liberian president Charles Taylor had given her "some dirty little pebbles" (uncut diamonds).

Recently released movies The "Last Airbender" and " Inception" remain popular topics of discussion in the microblogs this morning. The terms are trending in second and fifth place respectively.

"CLR," the abbreviated term for the word clear moves up three places to number seven while The Discovery Channel's term for special programming on sharks, "Shark Week," re-enters the charts in eighth place.

Third, fourth and sixth place are taken by the memes "#icantbewithsomeone," "#thingsthatbotherme" and "#ifcelebswerecartoons."

The controversial "Prop 8," a proposition that banned same-sex marriage in the US state of California, was overturned on August 4. The historic decision was celebrated on Twitter with the terms "Overturned" and "Prop."

Reactions in the microblogs were overwhelmingly positive, with social networkers tweeting, "Great day for the gays! Prop 8 overturned," "Prop 8 just overturned and ruled unconstitutional. For all my friends and their loved ones and those I don't know, Here's a hug," "I'm SO elated that Judge Walker overturned Prop 8 today. Love and equality for everyone prevails in our Golden State" and "Equality rules in Calif! Celebrating that people can now marry there regardless of orientation."
