Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

She has become the first microblogger to soar past 12 million followers on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, Sina Weibo, and continues to add fans to her total faster than her English counterparts.
The same can be said for many of China’s top Weibo users, the majority of whom now have more than 9 million fans.
The competition on Sina’s list of top Weibo users has been fierce during the week. Chinese actress Yang Mi’s fan count has eclipsed that of both Kevin Tsai and Xie Na’s to take third place in the chart. TV star Xie Na has snuck into fourth place, beating Taiwanese TV host Kevin Tsai by a just a few thousand fans.
Chinese actress Zhao Wei and TV host He Jiong both hit the 9 million fan milestone during the week while Chinese actor Chen Kun and American singer Taylor Swift surpassed 8 million fans.
In September 2010, Twitter had 175 million registered users, while Sina reports that Weibo had more than 200 million registered users in August 2011.
