Google I/O 2016: Google asks users to help name the new version of Android
Hopefully no-one will suggest 'Boaty McBoatface'
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. We don't know what the next version of Android will be called, but you can bet it's going to start with 'N'.
So far, Google has only referred to its new operating system as 'Android N', but now the company is getting its users to come up with names.
You can make suggestions on Android's website, and there's a few ideas already, like Nutella, Nectarine and Nacho.
Google is accepting a range of names, but try to keep it dessert-related - previous Android versions have been called Marshmallow, KitKat, and Ice Cream Sandwich.
With any luck, the competition won't descend into a Boaty McBoatface-style farce. Hopefully tech fans are a little more sensible.
The new name may be revealed at today's Google I/O developer conference, where the company will show off a range of new products.
More details about Android N are expected to come out, but there have been rumours that we'll see Google's first proper virtual reality headset, the so-called 'Android VR'.
You can follow all the latest updates from the conference on The Independent's liveblog.
