From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. For the first time ever information from a vast online database of adult performers has been extracted and analysed by a British writer who claims to have uncovered the 'average female porn star'.

Jon Millward, a self-described 'Ideas Detective', used information from the Internet Adult Film Database, an X-rated equivalent of IMDB that contains details of over 10,000 porn stars, to draw conclusions about the work and physical appearance of adult performers.

Millward, 26, analysed data from the site over a period of six months to, according to his website blurb: 'discover the truth about what the average performer looks like, what they do on film, and how their role has evolved over the last forty years.'

The research, entitled 'Deep Inside: A Study of 10,000 Porn Stars and Their Careers', was published on the author's site earlier this month.

Among the findings contained in the study are that the most common bra size is 34B, that 32.7 per cent of performers are blonde and that the most common female role (based on film titles) is that of 'teen'. According to the analysis the most common female first name for a performer is Nikki and for a man it is David.

According to Millward, one of the more interesting facts derived from his analysis is that the most common surname for both male and female stars is the same: "I was a bit taken aback by the most common last name for performers: Lee. It's only the 24th most common last name in the US, so it's intriguing that it happens to be shared by the guys and girls with the frequency it does."

Millward also found the average debut age of women has not changed for 40 years from 22-years-old: "Whereas men have been getting younger when they debut," he adds.

The results also show around 70.5 per cent of performers are Caucasian and the average height for a male porn star is 5'10" for men and 5'5" for women.

The researcher, who says he's previously written over 500,000 words on the subject of sexual attraction alone, says he decided to study the data because pornography is: "totally ubiquitous, everyone has seen it, everybody has an opinion, yet there's scant actual evidence available for what it's going on in it."
