Ambience: HU is one of the largest further education colleges in the Netherlands and is funded by the state. It has over 38,000 students with more than one hundred different nationalities. And yet, its students still experience a small-scale, personal educational environment. This is thanks to the faculties being in separate locations, and the great emphasis on personal supervision.

Vital statistics: 38,000 students from 100 different countries. 88 per cent of graduates from Dutch universities of applied sciences find a job in one year. HU offers more than 92 programmes. Some of these programmes are completely taught in English, seven in total.

Added value: The programmes have a practical focus, with real life projects with multinational companies and two internships, so you will be well prepared for your future job.

HU offers special programmes for motivated and talented students. If you study in one of the business programmes, you can try to take place in the Topclass. The programme is an addition to and intensifying of the regular bachelor programme. Students will work on their business skills with extra attention for consultancy, project management, internationalisation and research.

Teaching: Teachers are in direct contact with the professional world. They use their practical experience in their classes. Students get to work on exciting real-life projects with their peers, for international companies.

Nightlife: There is no shortage of cultural activity in Utrecht. Every summer for instance, it hosts a film festival, a festival of old music and a dance festival.

There are plenty of cinemas and a ‘film house’ for the movie-goers and various theatres and clubs. There are loads of restaurants and bars, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with apple cake (the most popular cake in the Netherlands), a light lunch, a drink or a dinner.

Any accommodation? Most students in Utrecht live together with more students in a student’s house. Most likely, you will have your own room with a bed, a desk and a cupboard. Usually you need to share a bathroom and kitchen with more people. A limited amount of independent accommodation is available (with its own kitchen and bathroom facilities). All accommodation is situated within travelling distance from the various educational institutions: on the university campus the Uithof, in the city of Utrecht or its suburbs. Rental fees are between €375 and €655 per month and include utilities (water, heating, electricity). The accommodation is fully furnished and supplied with cooking utensils and cleaning material. Bed linen can be purchased from the rental office upon arrival.

Cheap to live there? Living costs are about €700 per month to cover rent, food, insurance, transport and other expenses.

Fees: €1,713 per year

Funding support: If you are under 30 years of age and studying a full-time programme at HU, you might be eligible for (full) funding (in Dutch: studiefinanciering) or a student loan from the Dutch government.

If you have the nationality of one of the countries of the European Union and you work in the Netherlands for at least 32 hours per month you might also be eligible for (full) funding. The same counts if you have been living in the Netherlands for a minimum of 5 years without a significant break or if one of your non-Dutch parents or your husband/wife/registered partner has the nationality of an EU country and works in the Netherlands.
