CHILDREN in North Down have been put on air pollution alert as part of a schools' environmental challenge.

North Down council today launched its Environmental Challenge 2004 for P6 and P7 pupils in the area.

This year's challenge is designed to develop children's understanding of the factors involved in air quality and encourages them to think about how they can contribute to reducing emissions to air.

The programme also tackles some of the core elements of the curriculum in Maths, English and Science.

The annual competition, organised by the Environmental Services Department of the Council and sponsored by McDonald's Restaurants Ltd, was launched by Lady Sylvia Hermon, MP for North Down, and the Mayor of North Down, Cllr Anne Wilson.

Speaking at the launch, Lady Hermon said: "I am delighted that the Environmental Challenge has returned for a third year.

"This is a tremendous project and one which I hope many local schools will participate in.

"Reducing air pollution is paramount, and understanding this and working towards the elimination of harmful pollutants in the atmosphere is vital to the future of these children."
