From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

They may have left the set with their heads hanging after a crushing 305 to 75 defeat, but one member from the Sidney Sussex College Cambridge team emerged victorious on University Challenge last night for having arguably one of the most talked-about hairstyles this year so far.

Despite not winning the quiz show, young Nicholas Bennett - a mathematics student from London - still managed to win the hearts of viewers who took to Twitter in awe of his unusual hair, a cross between an afro and a quiff:

And from the winning team, Imperial College contestant, James Bezer - a physics student from Manchester - also left Twitter users with wide-open mouths after a stellar performance which undoubtedly helped carry his team to victory:

University Challenge has been making news in recent weeks after a series of contestant appearances sent social media users into a frenzy. Kamil Shah from King’s College, Cambridge, had Twitter talking about his controversial choice of attire which included a leather vest.

Shortly after, Kate Lynes from Queen Mary University of London was said to have given the ‘best introduction ever’ after revealing she was studying for an MD in sphincter preservation.

And, more recently, Charlie Clegg, from St John’s College at Oxford, seemed to forget the point of being on a quiz show when he almost jumped out of his seat at the sound of his own teammate’s buzzer.
