Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

"I 've just recently started, so I have three years to go. It's a daunting task but I am really looking forward to it. I took a year off studying after finishing my A-levels; since then my life has lacked purpose and direction. I am not nervous about university life - I have faith in myself - and now that I'm studying, I've found that I'm a lot more focused. I really think university will provide the discipline my life lacks.

The work I've done so far is hard, but I've found it interesting. My first day, I was a bit embarrassed because I rocked up a little bit late, but I'm a good student really. I have a good mate and we often study together because we find that we really motivate each other when we get bored. I think it's very important to have friends like this around you at university.

I live at home, so I am missing out on the social life that living on campus can offer you, but living with my parents is good. I am comfortable with where I am and I think I've partied enough in the past few years. My younger brother is planning on starting university soon and there is no way I'm going to let him graduate before I do, so I am all about hitting the books right now."

"This weird man chatted me up on the train last night. He came up to me and said: 'I'll teach you to ride a horse'."

"Did you get your tooth sorted out?"

"I had such an embarrassing moment at the cinema - I got all caught up in the chair. We had to ask them to turn the lights on!"

"I put on my form that I was a vegetarian because I was feeling fussy. Now I'm stuck in halls with a bunch of vegans. It's very stressful."

"Was her bike broken?"

"Well, by the fact that the wheels weren't going around I would say yes!"

"My hot cross bun has gone down the wrong way. What a way to die - it's not very glamorous is it?"

"I saw these beautiful shoes. They want me! They want me!"

"Hannah is so bossy. I am so glad I'm not in her group."

"Did you know that a courgette is not a vegetable?"
