Last minute student stocking fillers

For students, Christmas in itself is a miracle. Sure, there’s the stress of looming January exams, semester two deadlines and unwelcomed question-fire from grandparents, but there’s more than a month’s worth of lie-ins. Similarly, there’s important things like remembering the nativity, devoting time to relatives and helping lay the table, but shining most brightly... there are gifts.

Yes, Christmas is the miraculous time of year for us students where the little negative signs in our bank accounts don’t really matter as lengthy wish lists turn into very real belongings before our eyes, through the magic of Santa. It’s the one day of the year where our adulthood independence retracts and forgotten childhood inhibitions take over. (I’ll admit to still putting a mince pie and a whisky out for Santa.)

The sheer novelty of gifts and gadgets materialising into our possessions without having to budget, barter or skimp on food supplies brings such delight to those of us living life ‘on the edge’ of our overdraft limits. For months, we’ve been making wishlists on our iPhones, doodling presents on our lecture notes and procrastinating our way through the weekend by compiling ideas for ourselves from each and every relative.
