What do they do?

RSM Robson Rhodes is a UK partnership of chartered accountants and consultants, with staff and offices across the British Isles. It's also a member of RSM International, the sixth largest accountancy and consultancy organisation in the world. The seeds were planted by a string of Victorian practitioners, and the key merger, creating today's firm, took place in 1970. Like all accountants, it has expanded its role, from traditional auditing of companies' books to offering wide-ranging advice on business efficiency. There's a lot more to the job than bean-counting. Specialisations include a couple of topical areas: helping water companies look after their assets, and advising police forces and prisons on how best to manage the rising prison population. Its forensic department has also recently produced a report into money-laundering in the education sector.

Vital Statistics:

Domestically, a workforce of about 1,000 is spread across nine offices. The worldwide group employs 19,000 people in 80 countries.

The office:

The head office overlooks a bowling green in the City of London. There are also regional offices in Hemel Hempstead, Cambridge, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin.

Is this you?

Around 50 graduates are taken on every year into business areas spanning the firm's activities: You'll need 300 Ucas points from those distant A Levels, a 2.1 in any degree subject, and evidence of commercial awareness.

The recruitment process:

The key part of the on-line application form, at www.rsmi.co.uk/graduaterecruitment, is the open ended question section, which lets you say why you want a career in accountancy, and more important, why RSM. If that strikes a chord, you'll proceed to on-line aptitude tests, and first interview, at your local RSM office, and then, possibly an assessment centre. Here you'll have to do a numerical test, a written exercise, a 10-minute presentation, and take part in a group discussion and have an interview with a partner. If you succeed, you'll join a structured three-year training programme, leading to an accountancy qualification. Training alternates between work experience, sessions run by external tutors, and in-house programmes on business skills, such as report writing and team leadership.

Top Dollar?

The company won't give details. RSM offers the familiar "competitive salary" answer to enquiries about graduate pay. It does, however, promise regular pay reviews throughout the training period.

Beam me up Scotty?

All being well, after three years, you'll be a qualified accountant, and have the opportunity to take on a secondment with a client, external body or at one of RSM's offices abroad.

Who's the boss?

The Managing Partner David Maxwell joined RSM Robson Rhodes in 1979, became a partner in 1990, and arrived in the top job in 2006.

Little known fact:

RSM's legal team has been retained by the United Nations to review claims for damages resulting from the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990.
