Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The most watched sports video on YouTube for the week ending August 10 shows a basketball thrown from atop a 134-foot-high tower, hurled by a high school quarterback into a net below. Whether it really is the world's farthest basketball shot is of secondary importance to many commenters - what everyone wants to know is whether it's real or fake.
Of course, patience and practice eventually pay off, and The Legendary Shots have over two years' worth of videos on their YouTube channel to showcase a variety of increasingly spectacular throws. This particular shot, from atop the Vulcan statue in the US city of Birmingham, Alabama, is said to have taken nearly two hours of persistence until it finally went in.
Soccer features strongly among the rest of this week's clips, and even Dave Stala of Canadian Football league team the Hamilton Tiger-Cats celebrates a touchdown with a bit of keepy-uppy.
In pre-season friendlies, Manchester United's new signing, 'Chicharito' Hernandez, scores during the 7-1 defeat of an Irish league selection, Cristiano Ronaldo scores a screamer for Real Madrid against the Mexican side Club América, a defender from Kazakhstani team Aktobe lobs his own keeper in a Champions' League qualifier, and a linesman at the Brazilian Cup Final can't hide his feelings at Santos winning the trophy.
Elsewhere, a Japanese baseball player makes an amazing wall-climbing catch, Tyson Gay beats World Record holder Usain Bolt over 100m, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship brings the hype for the August 7 middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen.
