Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Tony Yeboah gave the favourites, Ghana, a 1-0 victory over 10- man Zaire with a 23rd-minute winner in a heated African Nations' Cup quarter- final in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

Yeboah, who has scored 15 goals for Leeds United this season, was also involved in an off-the-ball incident when he appeared to elbow the Zaire defender, Ntumba Danga, in the face after 15 minutes.

Five minutes later, another Zaire defender, Nzele Lembi, was sent off for aiming a mid-air kick at Abedi Pele.

Pele, the Ghana captain, was later ruled out of Wednesday's semi-final against South Africa with a badly sprained ankle.

The only goal came soon after Lembi's dismissal, with Pele beating two defenders on a run down the left wing before pulling a cross back to the near post. Although the goalkeeper, Pangi Merikani, seemed to have it covered, Yeboah's predatory instincts got him to the ball first.

"It was a tough, physical game and we made plenty of mistakes," Yeboah admitted. "But the important thing is that we learned from them and we will be ready for South Africa."
