Despite his crushing 200m defeat in Zurich on 11 August, this 23-year- old Londoner has masses of talent and a fierce desire to improve his best from its current level of 20.18sec to sub-20sec territory. With Maurice Greene and Frankie Fredericks here, this is the kind of event which could seem him make the breakthrough.
KATHARINE MERRY
Performances this year have helped persuade her coach, Linford Christie, to allow her to make a long-awaited switch from 200 to 400m. Her third place at Crystal Palace behind the championship favourites, Cathy Freeman of Australia and Falilat Ogunkoya of Nigeria, saw her lower her best to 50.62. More, and a medal, may be to come.
DWAIN CHAMBERS
Like his friend and training partner Golding, Chambers is one of Britain's brightest young sprinting talents. Having broken 10 seconds already this season, he could move even closer to Linford Christie's European record of 9.87sec here, driven on by the fierce domestic rivalry of Jason Gardener, who recorded 9.98sec in Lausanne last month.
BEN CHALLENGER
Two championships - two victories. The 21-year-old from Loughborough has already achieved his season's goals of winning the World Student and European Under-23 high jump titles in a personal best of 2.30m. This is an extra - and the quirkily-tonsured Challenger cleared his best height with five or six centimetres to spare.
