White edges through to retain elite status
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Jimmy White scraped a 10-9 victory over the unfancied Euan Henderson to reach the second round of the Embassy World Championships in Sheffield last night. The victory clinched White's place in the top 16 for another season and earned him a match against Peter Ebdon.
The 33-year-old "Whirlwind", who has been runner-up at the Crucible six times, said: "My game has been a nightmare and I am just delighted to have got through this match. Hopefully now I can enjoy the rest of the tournament."
White led 9-6, but Henderson pulled back with breaks of 66, 50 and 58 to set up a tense decider, and the Scot had a couple of half-chances to complete a 10-9 victory. However, he missed a green early on and broke down again on the yellow with the score at 25-13. White then laid a magnificent snooker behind the blue to open the way for a winning clearance of 56.
Ronnie O'Sullivan produced a crowd-pleasing display, without the aid of any left-handed shots. He was on his best behaviour for the opening session of his second-round match against Tony Drago after being criticised for being "disrespectful" by Alain Robidoux in the previous round. He holds a 6-2 advantage going into this morning's session.
