From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The atmosphere was white hot, electric, explosive for the most acrimonious ice hockey game in Britain for many a year. The Crowtree Leisure Centre in Sunderland was the venue for the second attempt to settle the play- off game between Durham Wasps and Humberside Hawks, the first having been abandoned on Saturday after it dissolved into a brawl within a minute of starting.
On several occasions the lid threatened to blow off this explosive rematch but at the first sign of trouble the match referee, Simon Kirkham, drew the players into the penalty box.
Majors were called on Kindred, Bishop and Hazelhurst for the Hawks and Smith for the Wasps.
The first period ended the way of the Wasps as they led 3-1 through goals from Jonathan Weaver, Kip Noble and Damien Smith to a Mike Bishop reply for the Hawks.
In the second 20 minutes it was all the Hawks. Darcy Cahill and Cam Plante scoring inside of five minute for the Hawks but Kim Issell kept the Wasps in front with a goal sandwiched in between.h
At 4-3 with just one period left it could have gone either way. The Hawks got on level terms through Barclay Pearce and it looked as though an unlikely away victory was on the cards. In the final six minutes, however, it was Wasps that stole the points. Kip Noble's tremendous slap-shot from the point put the Wasps in front once again on the power play and all that was left was an empty-net effort a second from time by the Wasps coach, Rick Brebant, as they picked up the valuable play-off points.
