Victory by a nose to the Grindstone
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Grindstone, one of a record five runners from the trainer Wayne Lukas's stable, won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday night by beating Cavonnier by just a nose at Churchill Downs.
Cavonnier had inched his way into a fractional lead over the favourite, Unbridled's Song, with Grindstone a length and a half back in fourth, as the field turned for home.
Unbridled's Song faded and Cavonnier and his rider Chris McCarron seized a two length advantage, but Grindstone came with a powerful late run to pip Cavonnier in the last stride. It was the closest finish since Tomy Lee edged out Sword Dancer by the same margin in 1959.
Prince Of Thieves, also Lukas-trained and bumped at the start was a further three and a half lengths back in third, a neck and a nose in front of Halo Sunshine and Unbridled's Song.
Lukas has now won the last six Triple Crown races - a record - and joins James Fitzsimmons and Max Hirsch as the only trainers to have the Kentucky Derby three times. Grindstone, a 5.9-1 shot, now goes for the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the American Triple Crown.
