Halloween in New York set up a party atmosphere at Citi Field, and it was the home side who took the lead in the third innings, as rookie Michael Conforto hit his first home run of the night, high over right field. Conforto, a graduate of Oregon State University, is one of only three players ever to have played in the World Series events of Little League, College and now the pro’s.
Wilmer Flores made it 2-0 shortly after, stealing home after Granderson’s sacrifice hit, hitting high and wide to outfielder Alex Rios. Rios, mistaking the amount of pitchers on base returned the ball all too casually, allowing Flores to score.
Salvador Perez pulled one back for the Royals at the top of the fifth, but Conforto’s second homer re-established the Mets’ 2-run lead. Conforto has only had two hits in the entire post-season before this matchup but the hit, which again cleared the right wall, made him the first rookie to hit a double home run in a World Series game since 1996.
The Royals made it 3-2 in the sixth after Zobrist ran home from a Cain single to centre field, but it was in the eighth inning where the game unravelled for the Mets. A seemingly innocuous ground ball sped towards Daniel Murphy, a talisman of the Mets’ team. Murphy failed to ground his glove and the ball ran past him, gifting Zobrist another score. In the same inning, Cain and Hosmer both ran home off singles, rallying the Royals to a 5-3 win and leaving Mets fans in utter disbelief.
Kansas City have come from behind seven times in the post season this year, and now the Royals are just one game away from avenging last year’s World Series heartbreak.
