Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Halifax made light of the sending off of their full-back, Mike Umaga, in beating Castleford last night by a convincing 29-12 at Thrum Hall, writes Dave Hadfield.

The Western Samoan was dismissed after half an hour for a high tackle on the Castleford winger, Chris Smith. Umaga had scored one of the tries to give Halifax an 8-0 lead, but when Jason Lidden went over for Castleford immediately after it seemed they might make their one man advantage tell.

Halifax played some excellent fluent rugby in the second half and four more tries, two of them from their man of the match, Paul Rowley, kept them well ahead of a disappointing Castleford.

With Martin Offiah scoring a hat-trick the London Broncos recorded their second Super League victory of the season with an 28-10 victory over Paris at The Stoop yesterday. Offiah's third try was made by his former Wigan team-mate, Shaun Edwards, who made his London debut as a substitute.

London took the lead after 11 minutes through Offiah and he scored his second five minutes later when he appeared at acting-half and forced his way over from five metres out.

The Broncos went further ahead with a try from Robbie Beazley and Terry Matterson kicked his third successful goal to put the Broncos 18-0 ahead.

Paris registered a try from Nicholas Hyde six minutes before half-time but Tony Martin restored the home side's advantage eight minutes into the second half before Offiah completed his hat-trick.

Paris managed to cross the line once more through Jamie Olejnik six minutes from time.

The Oldham coach, Andy Goodway, threatened to resign after his side's 35-26 defeat at Salford. ``I have to think about my position. I think I have gone as far as I can,'' he said. "I honestly have to consider what's good for the club and I will be talking to the chairman.''

Salford Reds, last year's First Division champions, made it two wins out of two in the Super League after surviving Oldham's determined comeback from 22-0 down.
