Defending champions Real Madrid gave a rude welcome back to the First Division to Rayo Vallecano yesterday, winning 5-1 away on the opening day of the Spanish season.

John Toshack's new club, Deportivo La Coruna, runners-up for the past two seasons, beat Valencia 3-0 with the Brazilian Bebeto scoring two of them. Javier Manjarin celebrated his first call up into the national team by opening the scoring.

Bayern Munich maintained their fine start to the German season on Saturday with their fourth win in four matches, beating local rivals 1860 Munich 2-0 in front of a 70,000 crowd at the Olympic Stadium.

The champions, Borussia Dortmund, scored their first win of the season with a 2-1 defeat of Borussia Monchengladbach before a 42,000 crowd.
