Time for pride and passion in relegation zone
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The last thing beleaguered managers need at this stage of the season is time to dwell on their problems so the international-induced break in the Premiership last weekend was about as welcome as British mince in Brussels. For Alan Ball, the spell of inactivity, has weighed particularly heavy.
It is a fortnight since Manchester City last played during which time Ball's position has come under scrutiny in the media even if it has not at Maine Road. Yesterday he received a vote of, well you would have called it confidence if the chairman, Francis Lee, had not been so anxious to avoid it being described as such.
Lee countered claims that the manager's position was discussed by the City directors at yesterday's meeting of the club's powerful plc board, saying: "I don't know where these stories come from and I don't want to comment about it. I had 18 months of this when people were trying to stir up trouble for previous manager Brian Horton.
"I'm not going to have it again so far as Ball is concerned. If Alan Ball is here in two, three or four years' time and someone asks me the same question I would say I am not talking about it because the answer always gets misconstrued."
Nevertheless Ball will be facing relegation in his first season at Maine Road if City lose at Aston Villa today and other results conspire against them. A goal difference of minus 26 (compared to Southampton's minus 19 and Coventry's minus 20) will ensure that.
Their main hope is that Villa, already assured of a place in Europe by winning the Coca-Cola Cup, might be less than committed although yesterday Paul McGrath, the Villa centre-back, was offering the slimmest of lifelines on that score.
"We owe it to the other teams to give it our best," he said. "I know exactly how City must be feeling at the moment as we went through the same problem with relegation worries last season. I feel sorry for the City lads but they have to get themselves out of this mess and they can expect no favours from Villa."
The sentiment will be echoed by Southampton whose own dart for safety will be at the expense of Bolton's Premiership existence if they are successful at Burnden Park. They could be hamstrung by injuries to Jim Magilton and Simon Charlton and will definitely be hindered by the suspension of Barry Venison.
As a consequence Southampton's plans are awry, their manager, Dave Merrington, admitting: "The injury worries make it rather difficult to plan our teamwork. I want to prepare us to play a certain way but that is not possible if I have not got the personnel."
Ron Atkinson, Merrington's Coventry counterpart, would be tempted to say: "Tell me about it." Brian Borrows, David Busst, Liam Daish and David Rennie are already out of the trip to Wimbledon and Kevin Richardson is doubtful after suffering a bang on a knee in training.
With his resources stretched Atkinson called upon those perennial substitutes for managers in his position, pride and passion. "No matter who plays, I expect the team to show pride and passion," he said. "We fought back magnificently to get a 3-3 draw when we were down to nine men against Wimbledon earlier in the season."
While attention is on the bottom of the Premiership today, the top will be in focus tomorrow in a double form. Manchester United can take advantage of Newcastle's television-enforced break until Monday by extending their lead at the top of the Premiership to six points by defeating Nottingham Forest while the team who will accompany Sunderland from the First Division could be decided at the Baseball Ground.
Derby will definitely be in the Premiership next season if they can defeat the team immediately behind them, Crystal Palace, but if the result goes the other way the outcome will be delayed until the final day of the season.
The managers, Jim Smith and Dave Bassett, probably have their game plans, too, but with so much at stake it is unlikely the players will remember them. It is a story that will be repeated throughout football this weekend.
