Henman, the 21-year-old from Oxford, beat Jim Grabb, of the United States, 6-2, 7-6 while 25-year-old Petchey, from Essex, defeated the German, Patrick Baur, 6-4, 6-4. Britain are now assured of a semi-final place as Henman and Petchey will play each other in the last eight. Another Briton, Andrew Richardson, was beaten 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round by Lars Jonsson, of Sweden.
Thomas Muster, of Austria, will replace Andre Agassi as world No 1 when the ATP rankings are published on 12 February. Agassi, who replaced Pete Sampras at the top during the Australian Open last week, is demoted because of a change in tournament scheduling.
Southampton's Chris Wilkinson bowed out of the ATP Challenger event in Lippstadt, Germany, yesterday. The fifth seed was beaten 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 in the second round by Radomir Vasek of the Czech Republic.
