Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.ALAN SHEARER barged Norwich City off the top of the Premier League on Saturday with a performance which should have had the England manager, Graham Taylor, purring with satisfaction. The pounds 3.3m striker scored twice and had a hand in four other goals as Blackburn Rovers put the Canaries to flight 7-1.
Meanwhile all roads led to Rome for Taylor who was checking on Paul Gascoigne's form and fitness before England's first World Cup qualifying match against Norway next Wednesday.
Taylor saw Gascoigne inspire Lazio to a 5-2 win over Parma in Serie A, even though the England midfielder only played for 67 minutes before being substituted.
Nigel Benn found the eternal city distinctly unfraternal when he was booed after taking the World Boxing Council super- middleweight title from Mauro Galvano, of Italy, who failed to come out for the fourth round.
On Sunday Europe's women had an underdog-day-afternoon at Dalmahoy as they defeated America to win the Solheim Cup.
Scarborough, too, defied the odds by knocking Coventry City out of the Coca-Cola Cup.
