Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

THE Grand National goes ahead without a hitch and is won by Richard Dunwoody on Miinnehoma, a 16-1 shot.

Chelsea, a very long shot for the FA Cup earlier in the season, reach the Wembley showpiece for the first time since 1970, thanks to two goals by Gavin Peacock against Luton. Oldham are 50 seconds away from their first appearance in the final when Mark Hughes's equaliser keeps Manchester United's Double dream alive. Eric Cantona, missing because of suspension, is named Player of the Year.

Spain's Jose-Maria Olazabal becomes the sixth European to win the Masters in the last seven years.

Blackburn draw level with United in the Premiership as Alan Shearer scores his 30th goal, against Aston Villa. Arsenal reach the European Cup-Winners' Cup final courtesy of Kevin Campell's header while United thrash Oldham in the Cup replay.

England's cricketers, inspired by Alec Stewart who becomes the first Englishman to score a century in both innings against the West Indies, win by 208 runs in the fourth Test in Barbados.
