That was the weekend that was: Palace beaten by best of enemies
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.AFTER A furious row over a controversial penalty and a string of cautions in referee Anthony Leake's book, you could have been forgiven for assuming that there was little love lost between Swindon and Crystal Palace, who were beaten 2-0 at the County Ground on Saturday.
But such impressions can be misleading. In fact, the match was preceded by a Palace player introducing his two sons to the crowd and followed by an apology from a Swindon player for having scored a goal.
The boys treading the Swindon turf were Fraser Digby's sons, Joshua and Remi. Their father had been a firm favourite with the Wiltshire club's supporters for a dozen years.
The youngsters were wearing Palace kit but dad wanted them there as part of his thank-you to the Swindon fans "for supporting me over the years".
Meanwhile Swindon striker George Ndah admitted the victory gave rise to mixed emotions 12 months after he left Selhurst Park. It was Ndah's goal, just five minutes after replacing the injured Ty Gooden, that set Swindon on their way.
"It was great to score against my old club but I have many friends at Palace and I said beforehand that I would have to apologise if we won," he said.
