Sock was two sets up against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, 22, before the World No. 81 mounted a stunning comeback on Court 12.
Berrettini dug deep to complete a remarkable 6-7 6-7 6-4 7-5 6-2 turnaround, reaching the second round of The Championships for the very first time.
But as the players went to shake hands at the end of the match, Sock was overheard telling Berrettini: “Your coach is a piece of shit by the way.”
The American – who has endured a tough season – appeared to take umbrage at the coach making a comment to him after a point.
The Italian will now play former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Gilles Simon for a place in the third round.
