The record holder for many tennis-related categories Roger Federer, had no hurdles on the way to the third round of his beloved Wimbledon. Two victories in straight sets over Paolo Lorenzi and Gilles Muller bring him a step closer to becoming the first ever man to win Wimbledon eight times. He now has to overcome Santiago Giraldo of Colombia to keep his dream alive.
Giraldo, who turned pro ten years ago, is yet to make his breakthrough. The Colombian, ranked 35 in the world has never won an ATP title which puts him in the great depths of Federer’s shadow (79 titles).
What could also work to his disadvantage is the fact that he got little rest after a five-set battle against Marcel Granollers in the second round.
If Federer wins against Giraldo as well as records a win in the next round he could face his fellow countryman Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.
For Giraldo a win would mean a fourth round debut at any major tournament.
