From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Roger Federer, also known as the king of grass-courts, returned to the All England Club for the 16 time in a row. The Swiss opened his campaign by defeating Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in straight sets (6-1 6-1 6-) in just 93 minutes.

He will now take on Gilles Muller of Luxembourg who advanced to the second round of Wimbledon for the fourth time in his career after beating higher-ranked Julien Benneteau in three sets (6-4, 7-6, 7-6). He is Luxembourg’s most successful player in ATP history.

The two players have met three times before and the Swiss proved better on all occasions. It will be their first clash on the Wimbledon grass where Federer recorded a shock, second-round exit last year.

Federer is now campaigning for an unprecedented eighth title and Muller, ranked 103 will try to stop him and thus level his best Wimbledon performances (from 2005 and 2011).
