From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Venus Williams repeated her Wimbledon victory over Lindsay Davenport by overpowering the world number one to win the WTA Tour Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California.

Just as she did at Wimbledon three weeks ago, Williams showed she has as much or more power than Davenport as she blasted her way to a 6-1 6-4 victory.

"This is definitely nice, to come off with a win after Wimbledon," said Williams, who collected US87,000 and also avenged defeats by Davenport in the finals of this event for the past two years.

Although the rankings do not show it, Williams believes she is the best women's player right now.

She said: "I'm playing pretty confident right now. Not on paper, but in my mind, yes. And when I go out on the court for a match, I have to think in my mind I'm number one."

"She is playing so well," Davenport admitted. "This is the best match she's played against me."
