Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Twelve months ago Andy Murray waited until the third day of the US Open to play his first match.
At the end of the third day of this year's tournament the Scot was the first man through to the third round, courtesy of an emphatic 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Croatia's Ivan Dodig on Wednesday night. Now he will not play again until tomorrow, against Spain's Feliciano Lopez, who has won only one set in his six meetings with the world No 4.
The scheduling of matches is often a bone of contention here, with Murray one of those to suffer in the past, but this time he has benefited. "I don't think it's ever happened," he said. "Here I've never played my matches Monday-Wednesday. It's nice to be in that position because I've had some tough schedules here." Not that Murray will be taking the opportunity to do any sight-seeing during his mini-break. "I don't want to do anything," he said. "All I am interested in is winning the tournament."
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a potential quarter-final opponent for Murray, lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 to Slovakia's Martin Klizan, who was beaten by Britain's Dan Evans in the Davis Cup in Glasgow only six months ago.
