Anna Kournikova was bounced out of the $170,000 WTA SEAT Open semifinals today in Luxembourg, as Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva defeated her in two sets.
The 19-year-old Russian was the top seed at the tournament, but was unable to muster a solid game against seventh seeded Maleeva who won the battle easily 6-2, 6-4.
Kournikova ranked 13th in the world, overcame defending champion Kim Clijsters on Friday to secure a semifinal berth, but was stopped cold by Maleeva in the semifinals. The 19-year-old has not had a stellar year, making early exits at most grand slam events where she played. She was ousted in the third round of this year's U.S. Open, and the second round of Wimbledon.
The upset leaves American Jennifer Capriati the top seed and favorite to win, heading into Sunday's final.
Capriati seeded third, and 16th in world rankings, beat unseeded Barbara Rittner of Germany 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
The 24-year-old will be looking to add to her eight career singles tournament wins when she plays against Maleeva in Sunday's SEAT Open final.
Maleeva played her best tennis of the season at the Du Maurier Open in Montreal this summer making it to the quarterfinals before losing to Spanish player, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
