Johanna Konta misses out on French Open qualification

Johanna Konta's attempt to qualify for next week's French Open ended in disappointment in Paris when the 22-year-old Briton was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 by Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva. Konta, the world No 168, was the last Briton left in qualifying, which means that Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Elena Baltacha will be the country's only singles representatives when the draw for the tournament is made tomorrow.

Konta enjoys playing on clay and has been competing on the surface for more than three months, but she failed to win more than one match in any of her eight tournaments and let slip a lead against Voskoboeva. The world No 121 is an experienced campaigner with 18 appearances in the main draw of Grand Slam tournaments behind her. The 28-year-old eventually turned the match around, winning a marathon final set that lasted an hour and 12 minutes.

At least Konta was in good company. The second round losers included Germany's Andrea Petkovic, who lost in three sets to China's Zhou Yi-miao. Petkovic was at a career-high No 9 in the world rankings only 18 months ago but has had a difficult time with injuries and is now down to No 138 in the list.
