Bogdanovic back in favour
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Alex Bogdanovic's determined response after being marginalised by the Lawn Tennis Association has earned him a recall to Britain's Davis Cup squad for the World Group play-off tie in Austria from 24 to 26 September.
The Belgrade-born left-hander will join Andrew Murray, a promising Scottish intermediate, in support of Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski, the nation's top two players, for the match on a clay court in Portschach.
Bogdanovic, dropped from the LTA's funding system because he was not considered to have worked hard enough, has shown a marked improvement in his results. Since Wimbledon, where he unsurprisingly lost to Roger Federer, the defending champion, Bogdanovic has raised his ranking to No 202 in the world.
In his only Davis Cup appearance, against Australia in Sydney last year in the absence of the injured Henman and Rusedski, Bogdanovic pushed Lleyton Hewitt, the world No 1 at the time, in the opening set and gained Britain's point in a 4-1 defeat by beating Todd Woodbridge in a "dead" rubber.
Murray, who has been able to train extensively on clay courts at the Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona, has been called to the British squad for the first time.
"Andrew has earned his place in this squad due to his excellent form in recent months and we are delighted for him," Jeremy Bates, Britain's captain, said.
"He is a young, exciting and versatile player, at home on any surface and his form on clay in particular has been very good. I am also delighted that Alex is back to his best form, playing well and rising up the rankings."
