From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. The Spanish world number three, who missed much of the second half of 2014 to injury, faces the American qualifier Tim Smyczek, who beat Luke Saville 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, 6-4.
Smyczek, who is ranked 112 in the world, has never played the 2009 champion at any level. When the fourteen time slam winner was asked about his opponent he said "I don't know him very well”.
The match appears to be rudimental for Nadal, who will be aiming to win his second title in Melbourne after succumbing to Stanislas Wawrinka in last year’s final.
As for Smyczek, the Wisconsin native has never gone beyond the third round of a grand slam.
