Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Laura Robson's attempt to give Britain a double cause for celebration in Miami ended in disappointment last night. Robson and Lisa Raymond followed the triumphant Andy Murray on to court for the women's doubles final, but the 19-year-old Briton and the 39-year-old American were beaten 6-1, 7-6 by Russia's Nadia Petrova and Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik.
Robson and Raymond, who had beaten Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, the world's No 1 doubles pair, in the semi-finals, were up against it from the start and were broken three times by their experienced opponents in the opening set. They improved in the second set, but were unable to take advantage of an early break and eventually lost the tie-break 7-2.
Nevertheless, it was still a fine performance by the Briton and the American, who were playing together for the first time after Raymond's regular partner, Sam Stosur, became unavailable because of injury.
