Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Andre Agassi got another easy workout at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.
One night after a rare doubles appearance lasted nine games when his opponent was injured, Agassi overwhelmed Brazil's Fernando Meligeni 6-2, 6-1 in 52 minutes on Tuesday night to advance to the third round of singles.
The top-seeded Agassi overpowered the 29-year-old Meligeni, who was making his first tournament appearance in Washington.
"I try and walk that fine line between being aggressive enough to control the point, but not so aggressive that I miss," Agassi said. "I felt as long as I had him stretched, he couldn't hurt me."
Agassi broke serve six times in eight return games and was helped by Meligeni's five double-faults.
Alex Corretja of Spain also advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over 22-year-old American Kevin Kim. Corretja was down 4-5 in the first set, but fought off two set points on Kim's serve and rallied to win the next three games.
Eighth-seeded Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia was the only upset victim of the day. Wayne Arthurs of Australia outlasted Hrbaty 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Third seed Nicolas Kiefer had a much more difficult time joining Agassi in the third round. Kiefer won 10 of the final 12 games against wild-card entry Guillermo Coria to advance, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The German was down 2-3, 30-40 in the second set, but was able to break Coria's serve to even the match and win six straight games to take control.
"I think I got a good fight," said Keifer, upset in the first round of last week's tournament in Cincinnati by Todd Martin. "I didn't play well last week. I need matches, matches, matches."
Local favorite and 16th seed Paul Goldstein needed three sets to advance. After winning the first set with relative ease, Goldstein had to battle back from a break down in the third to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
In other matches involving seeds, No. 6 Byron Black was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Italy's Davide Sanguinetti, No. 10 David Prinosil of Germany beat Martin Damm of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3 and Australian Andrew Ilie, the 11th seed, advanced by beating Ronald Agenor 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
