Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Andre Agassi, the United States Open champion, yesterday repeated his Flushing Meadow triumph by beating the German Michael Stich in four sets in the final of the Creditanstalt Trophy in Vienna.
Agassi won a contest, which lasted two hours 48 minutes, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 when his opponent hit a backhand return of service long, stretching his unbeaten run against Stich to six matches.
The 24-year-old American, who climbs two places in the ATP rankings to eight, outwitted Stich, 26, with sharp service returns, stinging passes and cunning lobs.
Stich hit 18 aces and his backhand worked well for much of the match, but he was often caught out rushing the net by Agassi. 'Michael Stich is a very tough player indoors, and he started off serving so well and I was a little bit lucky to get back into the first set,' Agassi said afterwards. 'In the second I got a little tired, but I pulled it back together and played really well to win.'
