Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Teddington, who lost out to Reading in the Premier National League title chase, yesterday beat them 2-1 in a fiercely contested final of the HA Cup in atrocious wind and heavy bursts of rain at the National Stadium.

Teddington, with Jason Laslett - Britain's Olympic captain - to the fore, opened in aggressive mood and only a series of fine saves by Richard Hargraves (deputising for Simon Mason who is recovering from a back operation) in the Reading goal kept them at bay.

With Reading failing to take advantage of the temporary suspension of James Wallis, their hold on the Cup was looking precarious. But a little magic by their young striker Mark Pearn and a gem of a pass put Mark Hoskin in to score with their first real attack in the 24th minute.

Within three minutes Teddington were on terms. Andy Billson, having fumbled a half-chance, made no mistake as Nick Conway recovered the ball and returned it to him.

Reading no doubt will feel robbed at not receiving perhaps two penalty strokes early in the second half but it was not to be, with the winner coming in the 58th minute from Conway at a well-worked penalty corner.

Reading moved Jon Wyatt forward but with Laslett in commanding form they were able to make little impression on the Teddington defence. Their fightback was also hampered when their goalscorer Hoskin was suspended for the closing minutes.
