Swimming: Moorhouse joins ASA

THE FORMER Olympic champion Adrian Moorhouse is joining the Amateur Swimming Association as a part-time youth development consultant.

Moorhouse, who bowed out of competitive swimming at the Barcelona Olympics after a marvellous 12-year international career, highlighted by his 100 metres breast-stroke gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, will work for the ASA for 100 days during 1993.

Part of his time will be taken up with personal appearances and public relations duties, but the 28-year-old Yorkshireman's main responsibility will be to advise and encourage Britain's top youngsters.

Moorhouse said: 'Having made the decision to finish after Barcelona it would have been easy to walk away from swimming and take the commercial route but that's not what I want to do.

'I still have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. My contract says I must work for the ASA for 100 days during the year but I would expect to do far more than that, and I see myself making a real contribution - not just helping out.'

Paul Bush, the ASA's director of swimming, said: 'Adrian has been an outstanding swimmer for a very long time and it was felt we could not afford to allow his experience to go to waste. He has the respect of everyone in the sport.'
