Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

ROUND-UP

Surrey created a bit of history yesterday by beating Gloucestershire by 93 runs after following on in their match at The Oval.

It was only the fourth time they have achieved the feat, and the first time in a County Championship match. The last time a county achieved a win after following on in the competition was in 1993, when Nottinghamshire beat Kent at Trent Bridge by 74 runs. The last time Surrey managed the feat in a first-class match was against Cambridge University at The Oval in 1868.

Joey Benjamin picked up his second four-wicket haul of the game as Gloucestershire subsided to 207 all out with seven overs left. However, it was the all- round team effort that earned the 21 points after they had left Gloucestershire to score 301 for victory in 86 overs.

Northamptonshire needed only 68 minutes to clinch a nine-wicket victory over Kent - their first win on the Canterbury ground. Kent started the day on 192 for 7, needing 11 more runs to avoid an innings defeat.
