From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The racing world was yesterday still coming to terms with the surprise announcement that Walter Swinburn has lost the ride on his Derby winner, Lammtarra, to Lanfranco Dettori in Saturday's King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Dettori's agent, Matty Cowing, said: "The first Frankie knew about it was when he rang me on Tuesday. He's looking forward to it, but of course he has sympathy for Walter."

Swinburn's brother, Michael, who runs the Genesis Green Stud in Newmarket, reckoned the jockey will have taken the news philosophically. "It happens and that's racing," he said. "He was happy to have the ride in the Derby and they can't jock him off that now."

But Reg Hollinshead, with whom Swinburn served his apprenticeship, said of the switch by the Godolphin team: "I am surprised and disappointed. What did he have to do? He had reached the moon for them."
