Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Alan Stubbs' Bolton blues deepened yesterday when the pounds 4m-rated defender was relegated to the reserves. The unsettled centre-back, who had hoped to be turning out for Blackburn Rovers this week until transfer talks collapsed, will instead find himself at Sheffield United tomorrow night.

Stubbs did not play at the weekend and has little prospect of a recall to the first XI. Which leaves Bolton with a problem: how to maintain the player's valuation - and Arsenal's interest - without fielding him.

The referee's decision is no longer final, it seems. Keith Burge is reconsidering his decision to send off Vinnie Jones on Saturday after viewing the match video. And Julian Dicks' clash with John Spencer's head could be reviewed by Robbie Hart.

Burge dismissed Jones after consulting a linesman, who believed the Wimbledon midfielder had butted Liverpool's Stan Collymore. Spencer was left with eight stitches after Dicks appeared to stamp on the Chelsea striker at Upton Park on Monday. Dicks was booked and the Football Association's decision to take no action could change on reading Hart's report.

Derek Fazackerley, the Newcastle coach coveted by Blackburn, yesterday quit his job at St James' Park. The 44-year-old former Rovers centre-half is tipped to take over as reserve team manager at Ewood Park.

Wycombe have signed the Aston Villa winger David Farrell for pounds 100,000 and the Raith right-back Jason Rowbotham, whose fee will be decided by tribunal.
